Body Temperature Detection Camera

We know that aside from isolation, the best way to prevent the spread of Coronavirus is to detect the virus as early as possible. We also know that it isn’t always possible or efficient for an organisation to use manual thermometers to check the temperature of every employee.

Our body temperature detection system can be used as a very effective mass fever scanner, allowing organisations to simultaneously monitor the temperature of up to 30 individuals in areas in which there is a constant flow of people. Comprising of a thermal imaging camera and facial recognition technology, our Body Temperature System can provide temperature information in real time, preventing the spread of the virus to potentially thousands of other key workers and members of the public.

A key indicator of coronavirus infection, otherwise known as COVID-19, is elevated or raised body temperature. However, as individuals may not even be aware of this themselves, with businesses and organisations relying more and more on staff being able to come to work, the risk of spreading the virus remains extremely high.

Non-contact handheld IR Laser thermometers go some way towards testing the body temperature of individuals, but there are a number of challenges with this approach. The market is flooded with cheap, low quality, highly inaccurate hand-held thermometers that do more to raise concerns and frustration than they do solve the issue of measuring body temperature to reassure individuals.

The handheld method of testing is perfectly ok as the final, double-check to confirm a previous alert of high temperature, but as a first-line defence, it is simply impractical where many people are flowing through a narrow channel such as the entrance to a building or office.

Rapid testing for raised body temperature

The solution to simultaneous mass body temperature checking is using a high quality, purpose-designed Body Temperature Detection Camera System.

Our solution allows near-instant and accurate facial temperature monitoring of up to 30 people simultaneously, and in a continuous flow. The readings are shown live on a monitor and fed dynamically to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) which triggers an alert when high body temperature is detected in an individual. The person in question is highlighted on a screen to allow for immediate identification.

Fast response times and high accuracy aids in the detection of potentially infected individuals who can be second-level tested with a suitable, high-quality hand-held, non-contact digital thermometer.

How does our body temperature detection system work?

Any object with a temperature above absolute zero will emit a detectable amount of thermal radiation in the form of infrared. A thermal camera converts infrared radiation into grayscale values and matches those grayscale values to temperature values through an algorithm model.

Thermal cameras with high-temperature accuracy can help detect elevated body temperatures which may indicate the presence of a fever. Ideal situations include measuring the elevated body temperature screening of employees, visitors, commuters, shoppers, and construction workers.

Thermal Camera

  1. Measurement accuracy ±0.5 °C or ±0.3 °C depending on the option chosen
  2. Measurement distance: 0.8m-2.5m or 2m-7m depending on the option chosen.
  3. Up to 30 targets at the same time

Blackbody Calibration Unit

  1. Blackbody is a standard temperature source used for temperature calibration
  2. Measurements are affected by environmental factors so this device calibrates in real-time

Smart NVR

  1. Integrated with face detection
  2. Suitable for single-point emergency deployment and small or medium-sized project selection

Body temperature checking features

  • Fast temperature measurement – detects temperatures in up to 30ms
  • Instantly Scan up to 30 people in high footfall areas – real-time, continuous detection
  • High-temperature accuracy – can measure temperature within a ±0.5 °C or ±0.3 °C range (depending on option chosen)
  • Long-distance, remote scanning – scan up to 7m away
  • Facial temperature measure only – facial recognition is combined with heat detection to reduce false positives by only measuring facial temperature
  • Mobile app and alerts – get alerts sent directly to your mobile device – no need for a monitoring station
  • Environment calibration – adjust settings based on environmental conditions
  • Dual spectrum technology – the camera only needs visible light to capture a human subject, allowing thermal imaging to function under a range of conditions
  • Versatile mounting – the unit can be wall-mounted or used via a tripod giving you flexibility in positioning.

Where can the Body Temperature Detection System be used?

The system is ideal where high footfall is commonplace and unavoidable:

Medical facilities – first and foremost, it’s important that we offer protection to healthcare workers ‘on the front line,’ who are risking their lives to help others at this time. The body temperature scanner can be used in hospital entrances, doctors surgeries or pop-up/field hospitals in which there is a high footfall of both medical staff and members of the general public.

Transport – public transport usage at this time may be unavoidable if you are a key worker or are required to travel. The body temperature scanner can be used in transport hubs such as airports and train stations to quickly detect an infected passenger and take appropriate action to reduce the spread of the virus.

Supermarkets – the UK government has deemed a visit to the supermarket as essential travel. Our supermarkets are still very busy at this time and an additional precaution such as a body temperature scanner can be an effective preventive measure to stop the spread of the virus in stores.

Events – Whilst the majority of events have been cancelled, there are still many key events such as press conferences that will need to be carried out in a safe environment. A fever detection system can help to give key workers peace of mind in event environments.

Body Temperature Detection System versus Hand-held Thermometers

Body Temperature Detection System

  • 30-plus people can be measured simultaneously in real time (within 30ms)
  • Dynamic real-time continuous detection
  • Enable people to continue moving in a flow, rather than stop-start
  • Intelligent, accurate and automatic temperature measurement
  • Facial detection technology prevents false readings by eliminating misreads from face masks, hats or heavy coats

Hand-held Thermometer Measurement

  • Manual, hand-held measurements taken
  • Individual temperature measurements can only be taken one person at a time
  • Stop-start process is only option, no high-level people flow
  • Manual measurement requires compromised social distancing and higher risk of physical contact

Body Temperature Scanners FAQs

Thermal cameras detect temperature by recognizing and capturing different levels of infrared light. This light is invisible to the naked eye, but can be felt as heat if the intensity is high enough.

All objects emit some kind of infrared radiation and it’s one of the ways that heat is transferred. The hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it produces. Thermal cameras can see this radiation and convert it to an image that we can then see with our eyes, much like how a night vision camera can capture invisible infrared light and convert it to an image that our eyes can see.

Temperature variations are visible through clothing but the heavier/thicker the clothing, the less infrared is emitted as heat – that’s why clothes keep you warm in cold weather.

Body temperature detection cameras are designed to be more accurate when looking at visible skin, and the temperature of the human face is an accurate indication of body temperature. Thermal cameras may see heat radiating from a clothed area of the body but it will not in any way be an accurate indicator of body temperature.

When the human body reacts to an infection, body temperature increases as a direct result of the process of fighting the infection.

A body temperature detection camera is designed to detect elevated human body temperature and will raise an alert when the detected temperature exceeds a predetermined level as this may indicate the presence of an infection in that person. This is, therefore, an excellent first-line defence against allowing potentially infected individuals into a building.

Body temperature detection cameras should be mounted approximately 1.5m from the ground, facing at oncoming people as they walk towards the camera.

Depending on the model of camera chosen, the distance between the thermal camera and the people whose temperature is being measured should be 0.8m – 2.5m or 2m – 7m.

A stand-alone body temperature detection camera is accurate to a temperature of ±0.5 °C.

If the temperature calibration unit, known as the blackbody calibrator, is added to the installation, this increases the temperature measurement accuracy to ±0.3 °C.
