Not the most cheerful way to kick off 2024, but the most recent Home Office statistics data tables regarding workplace fires make for sobering reading.

Insurance firm Morgan Clark reports that there were 7,648 fires in office environments during 2022/23, with industrial premises being most at risk. And, this statistic doesn’t include public buildings, garages, or private non-residential buildings.

So, the accurate numbers are most probably much higher.

Mostly, the causes were faulty appliances and leads, with poorly maintained fuel supplies close behind. Shockingly, 17% of fires were started deliberately – that’s nearly a fifth started by arsonists. Our Fire Alarm Systems

Broadly, Clearway’s products fall into two categories:

  1. Conventional. Here, one or more circuits are connected to sensors to detect a fire. Each device has its own wire, linked to a control panel, and there could be multiple connections. These alarms are best suited to smaller properties, where alarms cover specified “zones”.
  2. Addressable. The clue is in the name: each device connects to its own address. Unlike the conventional system, which relies on zones rather than distinct areas, the detection expertise of addressable systems is more sophisticated: the alert shows up on the main control panel with precise information about where the fire is.

This looped network approach is ideal for larger facilities such as multi-site complexes or shopping centres.

Keeping An Eye

Fire alarms can’t work in isolation; it sounds obvious, but if they detect a fire or smoke, people need to know about it. And, act accordingly.

Step forward, our Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), an NSI II Gold Standard centre that manages all alarm responses, including any suspicious intruder activity. Clearway’s fire confirmation systems will verify (or otherwise) a fire, identify its source, and establish its gravity.

A fire may trigger a power cut and/or there will be smoke. And plenty of it. Darkness will descend in half a second. In both cases, nobody will know where they are. Frightening and dangerous in equal measure.
