How Much Do Concrete Barriers Weigh?

How Much Do Concrete Barriers Weigh?

Concrete barrier blocks are a versatile, straightforward physical safety and security measure available in various configurations. Our concrete barriers weigh anything from 1200kg to 2500kg per block and are capable of withstanding heavy impacts, including traffic collisions.

The weight and strength of dense interlocked or stacked concrete blocks mean they cannot be moved or shifted without commercial moving equipment – and are a tamper-proof way to restrict unauthorised traffic, shore up soil, or direct vehicles and pedestrians.

What Size Concrete Barriers Can I Hire?

Clearway provides concrete blocks for hire over short or long-term usage and is always happy to recommend the right blocks for your intended use.

Below we have summarised the concrete barrier weights and dimensions for our three main types of concrete block and explained where they are commonly used.

Interlocking Concrete Barriers

Interlocking concrete blocks are often deployed to construct retaining walls, outdoor storage bays and flood defence systems.

Concrete Block ModelDimensions Per BlockWeight Per Block
LG81600 x 800 x 800 mm2400kg
LG61200 x 800 x 800 mm1800kg
LG4800 x 800 x 800 mm1200kg

Because the blocks connect to form a continuous barrier or wall, you can configure any size or shape of structure, depending on the pressure and load the concrete blocks need to support.

For example, a retaining wall built from 10 x 10 LG8 blocks would have a total weight of 236 tons, or a continuous low-height wall of 10 interlocked LG4 blocks would weigh 11.8 metric tons overall.

Concrete Jersey Barriers

Jersey barriers are a popular choice for traffic management and are used to erect impassable boundaries around properties, construction sites and business premises.

Each jersey barrier block weighs 1450kg and measures 2500 x 810 x 610 mm, with a longer profile than the interlocking blocks we discussed above.

The lower height ensures that a jersey concrete barrier does not impact visibility, but cannot be bypassed, moved or driven over by any vehicle. Clearway can also source alternative non-standard jersey barriers where required.

Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers (TVCBs)

TVCB concrete blocks are certified to BS EN 1317 quality standards. They are positioned in car parks, commercial property boundaries and high-security premises, with crash-testing performance to prevent fly-tipping, ram-raiding or illegal intrusions.

These stackable concrete blocks interlock, with one section weighing 2500kg and measuring 3000 x 800 x 450 mm, protecting pedestrians, safeguarding traffic from accidents and restricting vehicles from accessing unauthorised entry routes.

If you need an impenetrable wall around a higher-risk property you can install TVCBs in front of existing fencing as an efficient and effective security upgrade.

Concrete Barrier Installation

Concrete blocks cannot be moved by hand, particularly when installed and interlocked – one supporting wall or traffic barrier can weigh hundreds of tons and is designed to remain intact even under extreme pressure.

New barriers are installed with specialist heavy-duty cranes and forklifts delivered on high-capacity vehicles that can carry a substantial load.

There are also options to crane each block into position if there are access limitations or if you wish to install a concrete barrier in a space without sufficient room for a commercial vehicle to enter.

Once positioned, each block is interlocked using specialist bolt systems, which can be straight or curved to achieve the shape and size of the concrete barrier you require.

Choosing the Right Concrete Barrier Weight and Size

We have run through the standard specifications above. Still, concrete barriers are used in multiple scenarios, from car parking route guidance for short-term events to longer-term protection against criminal activity.

Clearway concrete barriers can be as large or small as necessary, and we can recommend the right structure border, barrier or fence depending on your site.

You can also install concrete barriers combined with anti-climb fences to ensure that lower-profile barriers prevent individual trespass, which can be a factor in vandalism, squatting and theft.

Delivery Options for Concrete Barriers

Our concrete barrier deliveries are always scheduled at your convenience, with an experienced nationwide team of professional installers operating from all Clearway UK depots.

You can book barriers for hire or purchase. We endeavour to provide expedited delivery where you have an urgent requirement or need to erect a concrete barrier as quickly as possible.

Delivery includes installation and positioning, with options to:

  • Supply and install concrete barriers to your specification
  • Remove or relocate concrete blocks as necessary
  • Consult on the appropriate barrier configuration and placement
  • Dis-assemble and collect barrier blocks when the project has ended

Many clients use concrete barriers as an integral part of construction site infrastructure, and we can organise reconfigurations at specified times during work phases to meet changing requirements for supporting walls, traffic barriers, flood defences and storage bays.

Benefits of Fitting Concrete Barriers

One of the primary benefits of concrete barriers is that they provide an immovable barrier yet are incredibly flexible in their usage. Your barrier can remain in position indefinitely or be collected or adjusted as needed without causing disruption or requiring extended time to assemble.

Barriers are built from dense, reinforced concrete, with each block considerably heavy, and connected to the next block with tough pins or bolts.

Concrete blocks can also be positioned in a staggered layout, without a thick interlocked wall, ideal for parking control and restricting vehicular entry to pedestrian areas – maintaining clear site lines while controlling access risks.

Many barriers, fences or hoardings are exposed to damage or failure during challenging weather conditions, whereas precast concrete is stable, tough and resilient; blocks cannot be knocked or blown over in almost any circumstance.

Clearway can organise a bulk delivery, including the on-site erection of a concrete barrier, and dispatch multiple vehicles if you need a large volume of concrete blocks to construct the required barrier size.

Each delivery can comprise up to ten barriers, and we can cater to small or large projects on demand.
